A formed angle that sits over the corner of the load so the strap bends around the protector rather than over the edge. It has a recess that keeps the cargo edge from being crushed by strap tension as well.
This is the one accessory on the page that is a legal requirement rather than a convenience: a tiedown has to be protected wherever load conditions could cut or abrade it. A cut strap is a violation whether or not it has failed yet.

Where they are required
Edge protection is required whenever the load could cut, abrade or crush the tiedown. In practice that means anything with a cut edge — steel plate, banded bundles, sawn timber, sheet stock, coils, machinery with a machined corner — and anything with a corner square enough to concentrate the strap onto a line rather than a face.
Keep spares on the truck. A driver who is one protector short at the yard will run the strap over the edge and mean to fix it later, and that is how a strap ends up cut halfway through on a highway.
