A grab hook shortens a chain leg. You drop a link into the throat and the hook grips it, so one sling covers a range of lengths instead of hanging slack over a short load.
The A-1328 has an eye rather than a clevis, so it hangs off a coupling link or a master link instead of pinning to the chain.
